The Surface Laptop is the machine to look at if the screen is what you care about. Microsoft uses a 13.5 inch PixelSense touchscreen in a taller 3:2 shape, which shows several more lines of a document or rows of a spreadsheet than the wide screens every other laptop uses. Surface Laptop or Surface Pro?

The Surface Laptop is a normal clamshell laptop: attached keyboard, solid hinge, touchscreen. The Surface Pro is a tablet with a kickstand and a detachable keyboard, which suits reading and pen work more than long typing sessions. If the machine is your main workhorse take the Laptop. If you want something to carry to class or read on, take the Pro. We stock both.

What to Know Before Buying a Surface

• The charger is unique. Surface uses Microsoft's own magnetic connector, not USB-C barrel plugs, so keep the charger with the machine. We stock the 39W Surface adapter under chargers and power adapters.
• Nothing is upgradable. RAM and storage are fixed at the factory, so buy the configuration you want to live with. 16GB is worth paying for.
• The 3:2 screen is the point. Compared with a normal 16:9 laptop panel you see roughly four more lines of text at the same zoom, which adds up over a working day.

What Should You Check Before Accepting the Delivery?

This matters more with a pre-owned laptop than a new one, and our terms say it plainly: a display or keyboard fault reported after the handover is not covered by any warranty. So check these four things while the courier is still with you, or at the counter before you leave the shop.

• The display. Open a plain white and a plain black image full screen and look for dead pixels, patches or lines.
• Every key. Open a text editor and press every key once, including the arrow keys and the number row.
• The battery. Unplug the charger and confirm the machine holds a charge. Two hours of backup is guaranteed for 15 days.
• Ports and camera. Plug something into each USB port, and open the camera app once.
